A controlled burn at Yarrabah has sent smoke along Cairns and the east coast on Friday afternoon.
The fire was a hazard reduction burn, near Pine Creek-Yarrabah Road, Yarrabah.
A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman confirmed crews were on scene to assist.
“This is a Queensland Parks and Wildlife controlled burn, we’re just assisting,” the spokeswoman said.
Residents from Cairns and surrounding areas were urged to stay inside and close doors and windows, keep respiratory medications close by, avoid driving through smoke where possible, and to watch out for firefighters working in the area.
Drones are not permitted to be flown around the fire as it could affect air operations.
