Claims ice rink melted to cause shopping centre flood addressed

Speculation was rife the DFO ice skating rink melted on Thursday to trigger an inundation of the shopping centre.

The DFO ice skating rink didn’t melt on Thursday despite social media going into overdrive.

A social media post titled “Rivers DFO is a river … looks like ice rink has melted?” sparked considerable interest and a thread full of hilarious comments.

Emergency services were called to the Mulgrave Rd centre and the factory outlet was evacuated that morning

But a DFO Cairns spokesman said water through the centre was caused by a burst water line in the ceiling.

“It had nothing to do with the ice skating rink which was decommissioned a fortnight ago as that tenant is vacating,” he said.

Queensland Fire Service arrived at the shopping centre about 11am and worked to isolate the water source.

“We automatically get called when something like that happens,” a spokeswoman said.

“(Fire suppression units) activated in that zone (at the ice rink) and we have gone and investigated and they isolated the water supply and they were gone by 12.09am.”

Worker at the Brown & Co Bakery Michael Ave said he had heard speculation the water was coming from the Cairns Ice Skating Rink.

“That’s what people thought it was but it wasn’t anything major,” he said.

“But our side had to evacuate.”

After four years the Cairns Ice Skating Rink announced recently the permanent closing of the businesses doors due to the lease expiring.

“We will be officially closed from Monday September 16,” a statement on the website read.

“Thank you to all our customers for your support.”

The incident follows a similar situation at the Cairns Hospital in August when torrents of water streamed through the roof, down lift shafts and the fire stairs and forced the emergency shutdown of elevators and relocation of services.
