For the first time in nine months an infamous four-wheel-drive adventure trail will soon reopen after months of road repair work.

The CREB Track, known as one of the nation’s most challenging off-road trails, was closed in August last year by police due to extensive rain.

Soon after the road copped a battering when the tail of Cyclone Jasper whipped the entire Douglas region with a historic deluge in late December.

This week Douglas Shire Council announced the route will be open to serious four-wheel-drivers from Monday, September 9, subject to weather conditions.

Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said the track suffered significant damage in the flooding that followed Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

“The southern river crossing of the trail has been reinstated while numerous small landslips and fallen trees have been cleared off the track,” Mayor Scomazzon said.

“A big thank you to council staff and contractors for all their hard work to open the CREB Track this year.

“I am sure there are many four-wheel-drive enthusiasts who can’t wait to test their skills on the track’s rugged terrain and river crossings once more.”

The track starts at a crossing of the Daintree River near the Daintree Village and continues for 71kms through mountainous terrain before emerging at the Indigenous community of Wujal Wujal.

The track is very steep and rough and is only suitable for well-equipped four-wheel-drive vehicles and those with vehicle recovery experience. It is not suitable for trailers.

Douglas Shire Council warned travellers needed to keep an eye on the weather as it only took a light shower and the track can become impassable.

Pack recovery gear, travel in a convoy, and always carry food and water in case you need to camp overnight on the track, which is not uncommon.

The CREB (Cairns Regional Electricity Board) Track was first sliced through the Daintree Rainforest as a service route for the power line to Cooktown in the early 1980s.
