Cairns Weather: BOM provides update on Winter across Far North

FRIDAY 7AM: THOSE morning lattes will never have tasted, or felt, better as the mercury plummeted across the Far North on Friday morning with a “feels like” temperature dropping to 10C in one town.

Mareeba was the coolest, recording it’s lowest temperature of the morning at 6.30am with 14.1C, with the atmosphere feeling more like a brisk 10.9C at the time.

In the Cassowary Coast, the Innisfail Aero station reported a constant 16C between 5.30am and 6.30am, with a feels like reding of 13.5C.

And at Cairns Racecourse at 6.30am it was 17.6C while at Cairns Aiport it got as cold as 18.8C at the same time, however with a feels like temperature of 15.8C.

Cairns is expected to reach a maximum of 25C on a mostly sunny Friday.

FRIDAY 5AM: IT might be time to get out those woolly socks and snugly jumpers because the tropics is about to have a touch of frost.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Harry Clark said Atherton will get to a low of 9C, Cairns will be 16C and Mareeba about 11C overnight until about Tuesday. During the day it would be 25C in Cairns, 24C in Mareeba and 21C in Atherton.

“Its going to be below average over the coming days for Far North,” he said.

“The wind and dry air will make it feel cooler than the actual temperature.”

The low for Cairns in June is 18C while in Mareeba it is 15C.

“It will be a very gradual warm up from there on. It’s certainly not record breaking but it will be one of the first intrusions of cold into the Far North this year,” he said.

“We couldn’t completely rule out on frost on very highest parts of Atherton on the Tablelands.”

Ergon Energy network safety manager Mick Bobin said Far North residents must check their rarely-used electric blankets and heaters before using.

“Before plugging in, it is crucial to check for warning signs, such as frayed cords, exposed wires and damaged plugs,” he said.

“If the appliance does have signs of damage, either have it repaired by a qualified technician or throw it away because it’s not worth risking your life or someone else’s by using something that can cost as little as $30 to replace.”

TUESDAY, JUNE 7: A SHORT cold snap is expected over the coming days across the Far North with temperatures as low as 14 degrees.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Shane Kennedy said there would also be some rain before the cool weather.

“There will be an increase in humidity over the next few days and a chance of showers and storms,” he said.

“On Thursday we are expecting the cooler and drier air will push in from the south and will push the shower and storms over the northern Cape York Peninsula.”

Mr Kennedy said the average would be around 18 degrees at night but from Friday morning it would drop to below 16 degrees.

“It could drop below average on Friday. Then it could go as low as 14 degrees on Saturday,” he said.

“There is some chance to see some of that colder air to push up to the Atherton Tablelands on Saturday which could result in some patchy frost.

“It’s only a slight chance but definitely a sign of how far north that cold and dry air is reaching.”

“A real cold snap of winter should be on its way.”

Mr Kennedy said it should warm up again next week.
