Following three consecutive premiership wins, a Cairns club has just added another trophy to their cabinet after being crowned Queensland’s best football club.

The Brothers Leagues Club Cairns was announced as the winners at the 2025 Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence on March 11 in Brisbane.

“I’m very proud for us,” club chairman Stephen Widt said.

“I’m just fortunate enough to be the chairman of the club — it’s the other people doing the work and they put a lot of work into it ... the volunteers and staff so I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

Brothers Cairns has 24 teams in total, ranging from under-6s to adult A grade.

Mr Widt said the award took into account the club’s sporting success and their contribution to the community.

They run a school program across Cairns and an all-abilities program alongside disability services ARC and Endeavour Foundation, which meets twice a week and plays up to two games a year.

For this all-abilities program, the club won the Support of All Abilities Sport trophy at Club Queensland’s 2024 awards.

“We’re the only community rugby league club in Far North Queensland to have our own all-abilities rugby league team so that’s something we’re very, very proud of,” head of football Tim Rumford said.

“We’re really trying to get rugby league out there and make it as accessible for everyone as possible, and I think that’s been recognised.”

Mr Rumford said the club takes diversity and inclusion “very seriously” and were now focusing on growing their female teams.

“We had our first under-13 girls’ team last year and this year we will add an under-15s and potentially an under-17s team too,” Mr Rumford said.

He said the club’s community-focus fed into their on-field success.

“That’s a by-product of the culture that we’ve adopted and set out,” he said. “So you know, if everybody does that, often success is not far behind.”

Mr Widt said they “don’t do these sort of (programs) for these awards”, but believes the club’s recognition was good for the region.

“We’re very much a regional club, and this is a state-wide award,” he said.

“So I think it’s a great thing, not just for our club but also for our area and community that we won an award like that.”
