Police have charged a 46-year-old man after a block was locked down on Friday morning in Bungalow when he allegedly fired a spear gun at police.

The suburb was sent into lockdown for more than 14 hours as police sought to bring the situation under control.

Police warned members of the public to stay away from a block bordered by Little Spence, Buchan, Kidston and Hartley streets.

Police revoked the emergency situation at 2.17am on Saturday morning following the alleged attack on officers.

Police responded to reports of a disturbance at a unit in Bungalow around 10:30am on Friday where police allege a man threatened and fired a spear gun at officers.

Police contained the unit and negotiators were called in to diffuse the situation.

No officers were injured.

The man has now been charged with two counts of serious assault on a police officer while armed and one count of assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence).

He has been remanded in custody and will appear in Cairns Magistrates Court April 1.

Half a dozen patrol cars and unmarked police vehicles remained at a Buchan St unit block at 1.30pm. Plain-clothed detectives were at the scene along with uniformed police.

No roads were cordoned off and traffic around the area was unaffected.

A police spokesman said the incident was unrelated to the search for a gunman who evaded police overnight, after an exclusion zone was ordered and a school went into lockdown in Edge Hill on Thursday.

Bungalow resident Aidan Macgregor said it was a worrying scene.

“I walked around the corner and was just in complete shock,” he said.

“There’s obviously something big going on because there’s a lot of (police) cars here.

“It can be a bit concerning but I’m just glad (police are) here doing their job.”
