Celebrating 75 years as a primary school, the Cairns Adventist College has begun accepting enrolments for its inaugural year 7 class commencing in 2026.

Construction has started on site to deliver high school facilities for the Gordonvale-based school, which currently takes students from prep to year 6.

Principal Adam Coe said the school would commence its first year 7 class in 2026, with plans to expand to year 12 by 2031.

“As soon as I stepped into the job eight years ago, (expanding to high school) was always part of the plan,” Mr Coe said.

“That’s why we moved out here 10 years ago because of the prospects with the 26 acres of land.”

Mr Coe said the school had already received expressions of interest for the year 7 class.

“We’ve got expressions of interest from our school families, but also from our wider community,” he said.

“More would be welcomed, that’s for sure.”

Before the expansion, Mr Coe said year 6 students would attend state high schools in their catchments or faith-based independent schools.

“I believe it’s important (to offer faith-based education),” Mr Coe said.

“We’re Adventist by name, but we’re a Christian school and it’s not about pushing our faith necessarily, it’s about those Christian values and morals, which is what a lot of our parents want, and what they’re after.”

The expansion was announced at a special assembly with parents and community leaders in attendance, including Division 1 Councillor Brett Moller.

“This is not just exciting for the school itself, but indicative of the growth we’re seeing in Gordonvale and the southern corridor,” Mr Moller said.

“This expansion will allow the continuity for the students now into high school, and that’s important for a number of reasons in terms of families … if children can garner education, where parents live, where parents work, that’s really important.”
