Emergency services responded to a suspected snake bite incident in the coastal locality of Diwan on Monday evening.

A Queensland Ambulance Services spokeswoman said an 8-year-old male child was flown to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition after sustaining a snake bite to the foot.

A Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service spokeswoman said the boy was examined by hospital staff but not admitted.

The incident occurred at 6.54pm at a private residence and comes after another snake bite injury involving a man in his 50s in Goldsborough a few weeks ago.

Earlier this year, experts warned of baby snakes slipping into locked homes across the Far North as reports emerged of a teenager being bitten in Aeroglen.

Dave Walton of Wildlife Solutions and Cairns Snake Removals had issued a warning to pet owners last month saying there was “never a day off” to keep their guinea pigs, dogs, cats chickens and caged birds safe.

According to figures released by QAS Media, triple-0 calls for suspected snake bites in the Cairns and Hinterland area in the last 12 months have totalled at 92 with two reports recorded just last week.

In February alone, there have been ten incidents of suspected snake bites, following 12 calls as of January 2023.

Cape York has recorded a total of eight calls for suspected snake bites since March 2022.
