Alleged outlaw Mongols members Jessie Steven Ashworth and Matthew Haynes in Cairns Court

Two of seven men alleged to be part of an emerging Cairns chapter of an outlaw motorcycle gang appeared in Cairns Magistrates Court on Friday.

Detectives raid Cairns homes in operation targeting Mongols Outlaw Motorcycle Gang

Two members of the alleged emerging Cairns chapter of the Mongols Outlaw Motorcycle Gang appeared in Cairns Magistrates Court on November 10.

Cairns police announced on November 2 they had charged seven people as part of an operation targeting members and associates of the Mongols in Cairns.

Officers from the Major and Organised Crime Squad (Far Northern), Organised Crime Gangs Group and Taskforce Maxima, supported by Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch and Far North District Tactical Crime Squad, did multiple raids at properties in Smithfield, Kewarra Beach, Mooroobool, Redlynch, Holloways Beach, and Edmonton, on October 26 and seven men were charged.

Jessie Steven Ashworth, 30, of Manunda, charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, contravening order about information necessary to access information stored electronically, and driving without a licence disqualified by court order, appeared in Cairns Magistrates Court with the matter adjourned to December 1.

Matthew Stewart Haynes, charged with an evasion offence, also had his matter adjourned to December 1.

The raids follow several targeted vehicle intercepts on October 18, where detectives identified seven Mongols OMCG members.

Acting Detective Inspector Mark Andrews said as a result of vehicle intercepts, police had issued five notices to appear for drug driving and possession of dangerous drugs, namely steroids.

“Our message is clear, if you are a member of or if you associate with organised crime groups such as the Mongols OMCG, you will be targeted,” he said.
