Joe Manitta named as elderly man injured in alleged Mareeba car park attack

A 78-year-old Mareeba man faces months in hospital with multiple broken bones after an alleged daylight assault outside a supermarket that left him unconscious.

Mareeba man Joe Manitta, 78, has been identified as the elderly man, alleged assaulted in broad-daylight assault outside a supermarket in late June.

It is understood Mr Manitta is facing months in hospital after suffering multiple broken bones.

Police allege the 78-year-old was attacked while walking to his car in front of the busy shopping centre on Atherton Street about 12.45 pm on June 26.

A Queensland Police spokesman said he was left with serious facial and body injuries after an incident.

“The elderly victim sustained lacerations to his face and lower body and required medical treatment,” he said.

Detectives from the Tablelands Criminal Investigation Branch allege the attacker, a 42-year-old Mareeba man, fled the scene on foot before police arrived.

Following an investigation, the 42-year-old was arrested on Thursday, August 7 and has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court on August 20.

Police say inquiries are continuing and have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
