Victorian landlord’s “insane” demands of future tenant

A prospective landlord has put out a bizarre list of demands of their future tenants including banning spouses and threatening to call police for breaking any rules.

A rental listing has gone viral for all the wrong reasons, with many renters describing the property rules as “a nightmare”.

The Gumtree advertisement for the property lists two available private rooms in a share house in Mooroopna, 181 kilometres north of Melbourne, for $500 a week in rent.

Boasting a “lake front view”, any successful tenant will be required to abide by the rules of the house, with more than just the threat of eviction if any of these are broken.

“Candidate must understand it is not a right to live it (sic) this property … Owner will evict candidate and call call (sic) police authorities to remove candidate from the property and charge candidate for any misconduct,” the listing reads.

Any successful candidate would share the home with the owner of the property and another tenant.

Both private rooms come with a queen sized bed and wardrobe space.

Along with rules such as a smoking ban and having to live with the owners dog and birds, there’s plenty more demands any future tenant would have to agree to live with.

“Candidate agrees to not have parties at the property and takeany (sic) celebrations off the property to another venue,” the listing reads.

The successful candidate is also prohibited from having people in the property without permission, and face an “extra nightly fee of $23 a night for each extra person they allow that extra person to sleep over”.

The listing also includes a warning that there are video cameras on the property and that “footage of them is being recorded and may be used as evidence it (sic) candidate wishes to go to vacate if evicted by owner”.

Further, those with a spouse or children will see the rent skyrocket.

“Must not have children or spouse unless spouse can also me (sic) the criteria and be prepared to pay the extra fee of another $370 dollars,” the listing reads.

The listing did not contain any information about how large the rooms or the house is.

The rooms are each fully furnished and include a TV and free Wi-fi, but are available only on month-to-month contracts and “at any time owner can evict candidate with instant notice”.

“For the right candidate seeing its (sic) a privilege to live here,” the owner wrote about the home.

While many share houses have cleaning rosters, this rental requires things to be kept at a “covid level standard” of cleanliness.

Those who are interested in the property will also have to provide five referees including your employer and past real estate agents alongside a police check to see if they are eligible.

A room for rent would be $500 for a single person and $870 for a couple. Plus $23 per night for any guests.

The long list of demands on any prospective tenants was met with outrage online, with many calling the listing “insane”.

“I get that they want someone who won’t cause trouble but f– k me dead, there’s a lot of conditions in that ad and it sounds like living there would be a nightmare,” one person said.

“Jesus Christ … I stopped reading it half way through … red flags for sure,” another said.

“It just kept getting worse and worse, who’d want to live with someone like that,” another wrote.

The individual who created the listing has been contacted for comment.
