Three teenagers have been hospitalised with burns after a science experiment went wrong on the NSW Central Coast.
Emergency services were called to Brisbane Water Secondary College in Woy Woy shortly after 9.30am on Tuesday after three year 10 students were involved in a science experiment.
While the cause of the burns has not been confirmed, it’s believed a science experiment involving ethanol spilt and caught fire, The Daily Telegraph reported.
NSW Fire & Rescue, paramedics and police were called to the Woy Woy campus, where they treated three teenagers for burns.
A teenage boy was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition with multiple burns.
The two other teenagers were taken to Gosford Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, both in a stable condition.
A spokesperson for the Department of Education shared their wishes with the students.
“We are deeply concerned for the welfare of the students injured during an incident in a science laboratory this morning,’ the statement read.
“Our thoughts are with the students, their families and friends.
“The safety and wellbeing of students and staff are always our highest priorities and we have offered counselling and support.
“We would also like to acknowledge the swift action of staff who immediately contacted emergency services and applied first aid to affected students.”
Parents were notified about the incident on the school’s Facebook page, which said there was “a medical incident on site”.
“Supports are in place for students and staff and we are still operational. Phones may be down and affected,” the post read.
“All immediate families affected have already been contacted. Thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.”
The science labs, where the incident occurred, has been placed into lockdown; the rest of the school was operating as usual.
