A teenager has narrowly avoided being struck by a stray bullet after his home was shot at during a gangland execution in Melbourne.

The boy, 15, was in the bathroom when a bullet entered his bedroom in Melbourne’s west and was lodged in his mattress.

His mother told 9NEWS the family was “very lucky to be alive” after the near-miss.

“If he was in his room, he would be dead.”

The bullet was fired during the targeted killing of Hawre Sherwani, 33, an organised crime figure.

Emergency services were called to the property near Heyson Parkway at about 10.30pm Thursday after reports of several shots being fired.

One of the bullets went through the 15-year-old boy’s second storey bedroom window, with his mother saying the family was rattled by the incident.

“Everybody was crying and everybody was really shocked,” his mother said.

“Someone walking in the street could be a victim … This has to stop.”

Sherwani, who is known to police and is linked to the Comanchero motorcycle gang, was found with a gunshot wound.

CCTV shows Sherwani ran to a house for help, pounding on their front door before collapsing on their porch.

Local residents performed first aid, but Sherwani died at hospital.

Police believe someone involved in the crime may have been injured in a collision while fleeing the scene in a dark Volkswagen Tiguan, stolen from a residence in November.

Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson said the incident was “absolutely targeted” and there was “nothing for the local residents to fear”.

“This is a targeted attack,” she told reporters on Friday morning.

The getaway vehicle was found torched in the neighbouring suburb of Fraser Rise about 15 minutes after the shooting.

The gunman has not been found, and police fear the incident could spark further gang violence in retaliation.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam or CCTV footage, or any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
