A man has been charged with animal abuse offences after allegedly capturing two native birds and confining them in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

A man will face court after allegedly capturing and injuring native birds in Sydney’s eastern suburbs by putting them in a suitcase and shaking the carrier.

Police were called to Anzac Parade in Malabar about 5.30pm on Saturday after receiving reports of animal abuse.

Upon arrival, officers were told the man allegedly used a fishing line to capture two long-billed corellas before confining them in a suitcase and leaving the scene.

Long-billed corellas, also known as long-billed cockatoos, are native and a protected species in Australia and cannot be harmed.

Authorities attended a home in the same location and discovered two injured birds in an animal carrier.

Police will allege the man placed the birds inside the suitcase and shook the carrier, causing the birds’ injuries.

“Both birds were taken to a Sydney vet in stable conditions where they are undergoing treatment,” NSW Police said in a statement.

A 61-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Maroubra Police Station, where he was charged with one count each of commit an act of cruelty upon an animal and harm or attempt to harm a protected animal.

He was refused bail and is set to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
