There has been a major breakthrough in the investigation into a hit-and-run incident in Melbourne that left a child hospitalised.

A man has been charged following an alleged hit-and-run incident in Melbourne’s southeast that left a child hospitalised.

A 25-year-old Clayton man has been charged with negligently causing serious injury, careless driving, failure to give way and other traffic offences following an incident that left an 11-year-old boy with a broken ankle.

Primary school student Suhas Sunkisala was riding his bike through a pedestrian crossing near the intersection of Railway Pde and Ardyne St in Murrumbeena on May 1 at about 3.30pm, when he was struck by a silver Toyota Yaris.

Police appealed for public assistance following the incident, releasing images of the silver Toyota they believed was involved in the collision.

The driver of the car did not stop to render assistance and continued west on Railway Pde.

The boy was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital with serious injuries – including a broken ankle and injuries to his face – where he underwent emergency surgery.

Police appealed for public assistance following the incident, releasing images of the silver Toyota they believed was involved in the collision.

The alleged offender was bailed to appear before Moorabbin Magistrates Court on August 1.
