Baffled bystanders witnessed the barbecuing of a baby doll as part of a bizarre protest held by activists.

The curious cookout took place at Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall on Wednesday, where a chef was seen grilling a “realistic” baby doll.

The rally was part of PETA’s ‘Leave Babies off the BBQ’ protest.

PETA’s protest comes ahead of the Easter long weekend, as the organisation seeks to remind passers-by of the young age of some animals “killed for their flesh”.

“PETA is urging anyone who’s repulsed by the prospect of chowing down on a newborn to consider that eating any baby – regardless of species – is equally appalling,” PETA campaigns advisor Mimi Bekhechi said.

“If you wouldn’t eat another mother’s baby, you should go vegan.”

PETA says more than 4.9 billion land and sea animals are killed each year to feed Australia’s population, and cited horrific cruelty from eyewitness investigations of farms and slaughterhouses.

The organisation notes that piglets, often used for products such as bacon and ham, are only six months old when they are “gassed alive”, and has urged Australians to consider veganism.
