Man charged over Nazi symbol after chemist allegedly gratified

A man has been charged with displaying a Nazi symbol after a shopfront was allegedly graffitied.

A man has been charged with displaying a Nazi symbol after a shopfront was allegedly graffitied north of Sydney.

Police allege the man approached a chemist on Beaumont St in Hamilton, Newcastle about 7.30am on Sunday before painting an offensive symbol on the side of the premises.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District were notified and a crime scene was established.

Following an investigation, police later arrested a 47-year-old man nearby.

He was taken to Newcastle police station where he was charged with knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol in public.

The man was also charged with intentionally marking a premises without consent.

He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Magistrates Court tomorrow.

It comes after a synagogue in Newtown in Sydney’s inner west was allegedly painted with red swastikas.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said officers were looking for two people who they believed were involved.
