Crane tips and crushes cars at Gold Coast university

Alarming scenes have unfolded in a university carpark after a crane tipped over, crushing vehicles.

A crane has fallen and crushed parked cars at a Gold Coast university.

The incident happened at Bond University about 11am Wednesday.

Nobody was injured, a Queensland fire service spokeswoman told NewsWire.

Only one firefighting crew was called to the scene, and they cleaned up a small spill before the scene was left with security and the crane operator, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said.

The incident occurred at the Bond University campus in the suburb of Robina.

In a statement, a university spokesman said a remote-operated tree-cutting crane was involved.

“No one was injured and the operator, who was using the crane remotely, is safe,” the spokesman said.

“Five cars were damaged in the accident. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland have visited the scene.

“The tree removal was scheduled to coincide with the semester break when most students are away from campus and there is no damage to buildings or impact to university operations.”

As well as the truck which anchors the crane arm having overturned, images from the scene show a large tree has also fallen down onto the parked vehicles.

The support arms which extend from the truck are extended on the right-hand side, but not to the left, where the truck has rolled onto.

The two rear axles of the truck have tipped onto a parked sedan as well.
