A chilling video has revealed the terrifying knife crime spree of a mentally ill man in the hours before he fatally stabbed a paramedic in a McDonald’s carpark.
Jordan James Fineanganofo, 23, approached paramedic Steven Tougher in the Campbelltown carpark shortly after 5am on April 14 last year.
The newlywed paramedic was eating his food while on a break with a colleague when Fineanganofo unleashed an unprovoked attack.
The agreed court facts reveal he stabbed Mr Tougher 55 times and left 20 incised wounds during the vicious three-minute stabbing frenzy.
“I am going to f**king kill you,” Fineanganofo told him.
Mr Tougher was rushed to hospital but suffered a cardiac arrest and died.
On Thursday, Fineanganofo was found not criminally responsible for his death by reason of mental illness.
CCTV footage has revealed the terrifying crime spree Fineanganofo embarked on in Sydney’s southwest in the hours leading up to Mr Tougher’s death.
According to the court documents, he entered Bunnings Warehouse in Campbelltown at noon on April 13 with a knife in his pocket.
Fineanganofo proceeded to intimidate a woman with a five-month-old child in her pram, telling her to “get the f**k out” of the elevator with an “angry” expression on his face.
When he left the store with his items, surveillance footage shows him using the blade of the knife to score marks in another woman’s car.
The 23-year-old’s knife-wielding rampage continued just before 4am the next day when he tailed a driver through Minto to a service station in Ingleburn.
The CCTV shows he was armed with a 15.5cm blade when he confronted the other driver and pushed him in the chest.
“F*** off, don’t touch me, I don’t even know you,” the victim said.
“You’re a man,” Fineanganofo repeated as he pursued the driver through the service station.
The man managed to run away from him and call police from a nearby school.
As Fineanganofo was walking back to the bowsers, he struck a car and then bizarrely opened the front passenger door and looked at the driver.
The victim said he laughed a “sadistic laugh” and leaned into the car, prompting the driver to become fearful and drive off in a hurry.
Walking back to the bowsers, the 23-year-old then snatched a bag from another ute and stole a pair of two-way radios.
He then fronted up to another driver, yelling “f**k you” and asking him if he wanted to fight.
The court documents state Fineanganofo tried to follow the man into the 7-Eleven but the doors were closed against him, so he banged on the door with “an angry smirk on his face”.
Less than an hour later, he flashed his headlights at a delivery driver near Raby and caused him to pull over.
The 23-year-old then confronted the delivery driver on the side of the road, bringing a knife up above his head and bringing it down towards the other man.
The blade pierced the driver’s puffer jacket but did not break skin, and the man fell backwards.
Fineanganofo continued waving the knife around with a “calm” look on his face, according to the agreed facts.
The victim told police he was scared he was going to be stabbed, but Fineanganofo got back into his car and the driver was able to escape.
Fineanganofo arrived at Campbelltown McDonald’s just before 5.30am and beeped his horn at Mr Tougher as he parked.
He armed himself with his knife and walked towards the paramedic and began stabbing him without a word.
Mr Tougher was trapped between his attacker and the door as he tried to defend himself and told him “Stop stabbing me mate”.
Bystanders attempted to intervene but Fineanganofo did not relent in his frenzied stabbing attack.
After a brief reprieve, he looked down at the paramedic and demanded he “say you’re sorry to me”.
Mr Tougher replied: “I’m sorry mate, for whatever you think I’ve done.”
The stabbing continued for just under four minutes, during which Fineanganofo screamed “I am going to f***ing kill you” at the bleeding paramedic.
Police arrived on scene just after 5.34am and tried to negotiate with the 23-year-old, who refused to drop the knife.
He didn’t let go of the knife until officers deployed a Taser and he was physically subdued.
On Friday, Justice David Davies determined the killing had been proven but Fineanganofo was not criminally responsible by reason of mental illness.
“I am satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused committed the physical acts,” he said.
“(I) find the accused was suffering from a mental health impairment at the time”.
The 23-year-old will remain in custody until he returns to court next week before his matter is referred for a further mental health review.
