Australians travelling to France have been warned to “exercise a high degree of caution” after the European nation raised its terror alert warning to the highest level.

Australian government travel information website Smartraveller has advised tourists to expect “high-level security measures” to be in place throughout France, including within schools, places of worship, shopping centres and landmarks.

A deadly terrorist attack on a Moscow concert hall in Russia on March 23 prompted France to raise its national terror alert warning.

Terror cell, ISIS has since claimed responsibility for the attack.

Australians travelling to the popular holiday destination are being urged to remain cautious around locations known to be possible terrorist targets, including high traffic areas and popular landmarks.

“Be aware of your surroundings, monitor local media and follow the advice of the local authorities,” the Smartraveller update said.

“Attacks can occur at any time. Methods of attack have included knife attacks, shootings, bombings and vehicle attacks.”

Those planning to travel to France to commemorate Anzac Day on April 25 are also urged to “understand the risks and plan ahead”.

France has previously been the target of terror attacks by terrorist groups, with the Bataclan theatre massacre in 2015 claiming 130 lives.
