Andrew William Campbell to stand trial for manslaughter of baby Dexter in 2019

A man who was on a days-long drug binge when an infant in his care died will stand trial nearly six years after the tragedy.

A man charged with the manslaughter of an eight-month-old baby after allegedly forgetting about the child while on a days-long drug binge will stand trial nearly six years since the boy’s death.

Andrew William Campbell, 45, will stand trial in March charged with manslaughter, misconduct with a corpse and failing to supply the necessities of life following the death of baby Dexter in 2019.

Dexter Wilton died when he was eight-months old in Ipswich in 2019.

Mr Campbell had been living with his then partner Natalie Jade Whitehead and her son Dexter Wilton in a unit in Ipswich.

The Crown will allege in court Mr Campbell “forgot” about the child during a three-day drug binge before Dexter’s body was found at a property in Raceview on June 21, 2019.

It is further alleged at trial that Dexter died of dehydration and malnutrition, having been left with no food or water for at least 21 hours before his death.

Mr Campbell’s matter was briefly mentioned for review before Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday.

Justice Peter Callaghan set down Mr Campbell’s trial date for March 17, 2025.

It’s expected the trial will run for seven days.

Mr Campbell is yet to enter an official plea.
