A police officer has been hospitalised with stab wounds after she was allegedly attacked by a man who was asked to comply with a simple request.

A man has been arrested after he allegedly attacked a female police officer with a screwdriver in regional NSW.

The constable in her mid-20s was allegedly punched multiple times in the head and stabbed in the arm and abdomen with what police believe was a small screwdriver at a home in Wagga Wagga on Friday.

She had tried to stop the man riding his bike without a helmet on Cutler Ave, Kooringal, just before 2pm, when the alleged attack occurred, NSW Police said in a statement.

The alleged offender, a 31-year-old man, was immediately arrested and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station.

The injured officer was treated by paramedics at the scene before she was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital in a stable condition.

She is currently receiving treatment for suspected fractured fingers and a head injury.

The constable is attached to the Southern Region Enforcement Squad based at Wagga Wagga.
