BFL: Drysdale breaks Torquay’s winning streak with point after the siren

A star Drysdale forward was the hero of the day after going back and kicking ‘one of the best points’ he’ll kick, with the after-the-siren shot breaking Torquay hearts.

Drysdale co-coach Tom Ruggles said he “plenty of confidence” in his star forward as he lined up to win the game after the siren on Saturday.

The Hawks came from behind to beat the previously-undefeated Torquay outfit, with forward James Breust slotting a behind to break the deadlock after the siren had sounded.

Ruggles said it was a simple kick, but Breust still needed to convert.

“Both teams went up both ends and kept scoring points, neither side could really convert,” he said.

“We were able to surge the ball forward in the last play and Breusty was able to work his way to the front and take a mark, and the siren went and he was able to go back.

“A point was all we needed and that’s what we got, it would’ve been nice for him to kick a goal.

“It was a pretty easy kick, 30m out on a slight angle, but you still need to go back and settle down and make sure you kick it.”

The win moves Drysdale six points clear of Barwon Heads, who suffered a surprise third loss in a row at the hands of Queenscliff, meaning the Hawks will play the Seagulls in the first week of finals regardless of round 18 results.

“It meant a lot for us because during the season we hadn’t played well against Barwon Heads the two times we had played them and then we didn’t play well against Torquay as well the first time,” Ruggles said.

“They were three pretty comfortable losses, so the confidence we get out of that game and taking the win is really good, especially for our young guys who really stood up towards the end of the game.

“In the context of the ladder positions it probably didn’t mean too much but for our boys and how we’re tracking right as finals are coming up we couldn’t ask for a better result.”

Michael Case is a confirmed out of the round 18 side already, having copped a concussion in the win over Torquay.
