ANGLESEA coach Jordan Keras says he is disappointed his side could not secure four points against premiership contender Drysdale after the two sides could not be separated after four quarters.

The Kangaroos led for the majority of the contest, including by 20 points midway through the final term, but a late surge from the Hawks meant the scoreline ended tied on 10.15 (75) to 11.9 (75).

Keras said he was proud of the team’s efforts, but they cost themselves the win with inaccurate kicking.

“I think it came down to us not putting them away early, we controlled the game for three and a half quarters and we felt like we were on top for most of the game,” he said.

“At one stage we had 20 scoring shots to eight and we were only up by 20 points, and that costs you.

“It was a mixture of emotions, I was really proud of the boys but our expectations are pretty high on ourselves, we’re not trying to prove anyone else wrong we’re just trying to prove it to ourselves that we’re a real contender.

“That was probably the most disappointing part that we couldn’t come away with four points.

We know they’re a quality side, but when you control the game for a long period of time, especially being four goals up in the last quarter.

That’s a fairly considerable margin, so to let it slip was really disappointing for us.”

Drysdale co-coach Ben Carmichael said it was “really impressive” for his group to mount a comeback, but it was a bittersweet result knowing they held a seven-point lead late in the game.

“It was really a character-building result for our guys, to come back and get ahead was really pleasing,” he said.

“They were on top of us throughout the game, but when we got out by seven points we weren’t able to hold on for a win, so it is a little bit disappointing.

“Anglesea certainly seem to have improved from last year, they were a really strong side on Saturday.”
