Purple is the new orange as Darwin residents welcome an end to the Top End scooter wars.

Beam Mobility will deliver 500 scooters, 150 e-bikes, and 100 seated scooters to the Darwin area on December 1, putting an end to Neuron Mobility’s orange reign.

City of Darwin chief executive Simone Saunders said the micromobility company had been awarded a two-year operational license for the region after wowing riders with its diverse transport options, safety features, and costs.

“Beam has an impressive and extensive operational experience, an excellent safety record, and commitment to safety and innovation,” Ms Saunders said.

“They complement and align with many of our values and strategies, including creating a clean and green city.”

Beam ANZ general manager Tom Cooper said he looked forward to bringing new micromobility technology to the Territory.

“That includes a cognitive test, which is our drink-riding deterrence,” he said.

“This will be turned on at certain times of the week and in certain locations where users will need to pass the test to start their Beam trip.

“This is our commitment to continuing to drive the highest possible safety standards across micromobility.”

Mr Cooper said the new scooters would generate 75 local jobs.

“Beam is focused on hiring locally, and we will continue to employ local people and set up local operations,” he said.

Neuron ANZ general manager Jayden Bryant said the company chose not to “overinvest or over promise” just to renew their operational license.

“In the current economic climate it is more important than ever to run rental e-scooter programs that are both financially viable and sustainable for the long-term,” he said.

“We would like to thank the City of Darwin, our wonderful riders and also the countless number of local businesses and community members for their support.”
