Hundreds of racing enthusiasts travelled from far and wide to spend Melbourne Cup Day at Berry Springs Tavern to watch six baby crocodiles fight it out for first place in their annual Croc Race.
Punters made the most of the warm weather, enjoying cold drinks on the balcony with a perfect view of the astroturf track while others got up close and personal with the racers.
Baby ‘Croc Sucker’ came out on top, wining first prize much to the delight of sponsor, Rachael Armon who said she was proud of her little “champion.”
“Size doesn’t matter, it’s about the enthusiasm,” she said.
“[I] absolutely expected [Croc Sucker] to win of course.
“Look at him - he was born a champion.”
Hailing from Queensland, Ms Armon said the trip to the Top End was worth it for the race.
“We stayed an extra week in Darwin, specifically to see this,” she said.
“It was such a unique experience … we had a great time.”
For the McAlear family, the trip from Melbourne was particularly special.
“[My daughter] Jade had a car accident 18 months ago and she’s now in a wheelchair and has a brain injury - this is our first trip away as a family after that horrendous time and today has been amazing,” Karen said.
“So thanks for a great time, we’ve had a ball here at Berry Springs — I think it’s better here than at the Melbourne Cup.”
Up the highway at the Noonamah Tavern, frog racing was the theme, with some frogs
commanding up to $1500 in sponsor bids.
More than 200 patrons packed into the tavern’s outdoor area to place their bets ahead of the big race.
Jake from Humpty Doo said it would be wrong to not back the “supreme athletes”.
“You have to be in it to win it … I’m not surprised the bids are this high to be honest,” he said.
