Movie magic is coming to Townsville, with a local disability and mental health service holding their annual All Abilities Disco.

Attendees and their support workers, family and friends are encouraged to dress up as their favourite movie character.

The event is being held by Kith and Kin which has been providing services for people with physical, psychiatric and intellectual disabilities in Townsville since 1981.

Chief executive Alfred Wimblett said the disco is important for Townsville residents.

“There aren't a huge number of disability specific events held in Townsville and we are not aware of anyone else providing this kind of opportunity for people with a disability,” he said.

The first ever disco was held 8 years ago and has become a much-loved event on the Kith and Kin calendar. The service also holds events each year for Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

“We support people with a disability to purse their goals every day. 8 years ago, Participants with a disability asked for a disco, so that is what we did,” Mr Wimblett said.

“Our work really is about skill development through fun and experience. The disco is an opportunity to have fun, use you imagination, get dressed up, dance, get active, socialise and maybe make new friends.”

“Every year out participants get very excited about it, so we are committed to running it every year.”

The Kith and Kin All Abilities Disco will be held on August 9 from 6pm to 10pm.

Tickets are available for pre-purchase from Kith and Kin, 123 Ingham Road, or available at the door on the night.
