Akol Geng: Southeast Qld real estate agent committed to stand trial on sexual assault charge
A southeast Queensland real estate agent has been ordered to stand trial on a charge of sexual assault, which police allege was committed in a hotel at the end of a big night on the Glitter Strip.
A woman woke from a big night on the Glitter Strip to find a naked southeast Queensland real estate agent in bed with her with his hands down her pants, a court has been told.
Toowoomba-raised real estate agent Akol Angelo Geng, 29, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on November 19 for a committal hearing.
Mr Geng, who most recently worked at East Toowoomba’s Hot Property – his employment there ceased several months ago – is charged with a single count of sexual assault.
Police allege the defendant, who was previously employed at Hot Property’s cross-suburb rival RE/MAX Success, as well as Ray White Springwood & Shailer Park, committed the assault on October 4 last year at a Surfers Paradise hotel.
Two friends of the complainant gave evidence, as did the complainant herself.
A male friend of the complainant’s told the court he arrived at the hotel room after the alleged sexual assault was said to have occurred, although he didn’t know it at the time.
He said he arrived at about 1am and woke several hours later, in the early hours of the morning, to the sound of the complainant crying, and asked her what was wrong.
“She told me she woke up to a friend of hers trying to force his hand down her pants, and he was naked,” the witness said.
“And then she said she tried to pull his hand out of her pants, but obviously, you know, he’s a man, so he’s a bit stronger than her.”
The witness said he then asked the complainant where the naked man was now, and she said he’s “passed out sleeping in the other room”.
“I thought to myself, why is he still here?
“I woke him up and told him he had to leave.”
A female friend of the complainant told the court she caught up with the alleged victim the day after the alleged assault.
She said she was told by the complainant that she was “very drunk” and had “passed out” in bed with a girlfriend, before she later woke to find the defendant touching her.
The courtroom was closed for the complainant’s evidence.
At the conclusion of the evidence, defence counsel Jack Kennedy conceded a prima facie case against his client.
Magistrate Veena Goverdhan asked Mr Geng if he would like to enter a plea, to which he responded, “No, your honour.”
Mr Geng’s charge was then formally committed to the Southport District Court on a date to be fixed.
The next stage in the criminal proceeding is for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to present an indictment to the court.
