After teaching generations of students on the same grounds, Freshwater State School is celebrating a century as a school on Corkill Street.

To recognise the 100 years in the one place, staff and students have dug through the archives to look at old student photos, class roles, and old memorabilia to display in the library as their own makeshift museum.

The school is also hosting school tours and a gala night, inviting the community to dress in their favourite cocktail attire and enjoy a DJ and live music.

The school tours and gala night will be held on May, 27.

Freshwater State School principal Sharon Jones said she was “very excited” to be able to be here for these moments.

“The planning for our 100th year has taken us approximately two years in itself,” Ms Jones said.

“Back when the school began, the first principal (Bridget Duffy) travelled to the school on horseback.

“To be able to be here and look back at the growth of a singular school is so special.”

School captain Emily said she’s mostly excited for the school tours.

“I think the school tours will be a great opportunity,” she said.

“Old students and teachers will be able to walk around the school and see how the place has evolved.”

Other school captain Zachery said the hundred years was important to him as both his parents attended the primary school.

“My Dad was a school captain in 1998, and I’m also one in 2023,” he said.

“Celebrating 100 years means we can look back on these moments.”

School tours will commence from 11am, with the gala night kicking off from 6.30pm.

Tickets are available through the schools socials and website.
