A DARWIN bodybuilder has returned home after winning the main title at the biggest natural bodybuilding competition in the world.

Andrew McDevitt, 24, was named the overall winner of the Natural Olympia, held in San Diego, U.S on November 9.

"I really wasn't expecting to win," Mr McDevitt said.

His prize was a 'pro card' which allows him to compete professionally in national and international competitions for the next year.

"I will definitely be using it because it means I can start entering comps with prize money and make it my career," he said.

"I have decided bodybuilding is what I want to do."

The former labourer has only competed in three bodybuilding competitions to date but has won all of them.

Training and preparing to compete can be a gruelling process.

"I pretty much go to the gym six days a week, twice a day," he said.

"The diet is really strict, I count my calories and know what I'm eating, why I'm eating and when I'm eating.

"You have to know what the goal is."

Mr McDevitt said he entered the competition to prove he wasn't on steroids.

"So many people kept asking me about that and I wanted to prove I wasn't taking them," he said.

"The national and international competitions test for drugs so there's no way you would use them and compete.

"Once I achieved that I realised how much I enjoyed it so I have stuck with it."

Mr McDevitt said he was always trying to better himself.

"I also want to encourage other people to achieve their life goals," he said.

"I've been lucky enough to find my passion in life so I want to take that and share it with everyone else so they can find their passion, whether it's drawing or cleaning, to me that would be worth all the money in the world."
