Thousands of students will don their academic robes over the coming days as they graduate from Charles Darwin University.
According to CDU, 2137 students from around the country who completed their studies either in November 2024 or at the end of the 2025 summer semester in March will graduate at the ceremonies held from May 20-22.
First Nations woman and Diploma of Creative Therapies (Aboriginal Healing) graduate Sandy Vella said her experience at CDU was “amazing”.
“I have a background in mental health and therapy, and I wanted to find out what was relevant to me because my grandmother was a child domestic slave,” she said.
Choosing CDU was easy, she said.
“It was the only course that was Indigenous led; I found it really helpful for me, and it helped other people,” Ms Vella said, almost breaking into tears.
“So, I feel blessed; for this place to exist it’s been really good, and the people, the lecturers, everyone has really helped me.”
Ms Vella encouraged those considering a Diploma of Creative Therapies to “give it a go”.
“Just get into it and let it lead you to amazing places that you never really thought that you would discover,” she said.
Master of Psychology (Clinical) graduate Rachael, who is currently working as a physiotherapist, said she found CDU to be “very supportive”.
“As a physio, I was always really interested in the psychological drivers of different pain conditions,” she said.
Master of Psychology (Clinical) graduate Savanah, a friend of Rachael, said she found her degree “really rewarding”.
“It was a really good experience, I think everyone — our lecturers and supervisors — really tried to pull through for us and make sure we had a well-rounded experience and prepared to go out into the real world,” she said.
Savanah hoped she could help others with her degree.
“If you can help just one person with something that they’re struggling with, then you can make a really big difference,” she said.
Anne Mbuthia, a Kenyan born student who graduated a Bachelor of Social Work, said she loved the field and hoped to continue in it.
“I went to social work by default; when I moved to Australia I found myself in social work and I loved it, so I just had to do the course,” she said.
“I’m going to continue practising, I love being in that field, working with communities and working with children.”
She said she enjoyed the flexibility of CDU.
