Vintage restorations, kitted-out four-wheel-drives and a burnout spectacle will rev up the crowds at the first Cairns Car Show Extravaganza this weekend.
More than a thousand revheads and motor enthusiasts are expected to roll in this Sunday at Edmonton Speedway, where 200 vehicles are set to compete for best car in show.
Event organiser and Sunday Cairns Cruisers secretary Leanne Borgmeyer said the event wasn’t just for the top end of town.
“It’s not just for the $2 million restorations, it’s anyone that’s got a car of interest can come along,” Ms Borgmeyer said.
“We have put a lot into this. We have some beautiful handcrafted trophies ... it’s going to be a huge car show.
“We will have old cars, new cars, four-wheel-drives. It’ll be a great cross section of people.”
Gates open from 7.30am and admission is $10, with $3000 in prizes and trophies up for grabs.
The event will be split into 30 separate classes, including best ladies and P-plater car, as well as a special appearance from burnout car Spotto57.
Ms Borgmeyer said the show was created after unexpected and overwhelming support from recent pop-ups.
“We did one in May, out at Fishery Falls Hotel, and that was just with three trophies,” she said.
“We thought we were going to get about 50 to 60 cars and ended up with about 170 cars and over a thousand people.
“This time we’re expecting people from further afield because of the trophies on offer.”
Ladies are encouraged to wear their best rockabilly and pin-up outfits for their chance to be crowned best dressed.
