The luxury SUV that should be in your top three

This little-known brand springs a surprise for people ready to look beyond its badge.

An SUV you shouldn't overlook

The Genesis GV70 might not be the first car that comes to mind when picturing a luxury SUV.

Some ask whether Hyundai’s luxury spinoff can compete in the prestige SUV class.

But let me tell you – it absolutely can.

Priced from about $82,000 drive-away, the GV70’s strong value makes this model a serious contender for those looking for an alternative to the likes of BMW.

The refreshed model has a sleek, sporty profile, with a long bonnet and coupe-style roofline.

Inside, Genesis has nailed the style and spaciousness.

The dash flows seamlessly with no awkward gaps or mismatched textures.

A 27-inch OLED screen sits proudly on the dashboard, looking sleek and well-proportioned without being overwhelming.

The infotainment system is intuitive and easy to navigate.

It includes wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and over-the-air software updates.

New technology includes Genesis Connect, which offers a five-year subscription to services such as emergency assistance, live traffic updates and vehicle diagnostics.

There’s even biometric fingerprint access that allows drivers to open and start the car without a key.

Each driver can set up their preferences for seating, lighting and even driving style.

The cabin also features a sanitiser in the centre glove box that uses UV light to kill germs on items such as your keys, wallet or phone.

The redesigned middle console is functional and features new climate controls and cup holders, along with wireless charging station that’s subtly tucked under the glove box – keeping your phone out of sight.

The cabin’s mix of textures and crystal accents provides a sophisticated, timeless look with a futuristic edge.

An additional touch of luxury is the in-car fragrance system with three signature scents (The Great Outdoors, Driver’s Awakening and My Favourite Place) that can be adjusted in intensity.

It’s a detail that might seem ridiculous at first, but it really does enhance the cabin experience, especially on longer drives.

The GV70 offers heated and ventilated seats, a dream for long trips.

For those who desire more luxury, the Signature Sport trim is equipped with Nappa Leather seats, a suede headliner, quilted seat patterns and a Bang and Olufsen 16 speaker stereo.

On the road, the GV70 really holds its own.

The SUV has plenty of grunt.

We tested the 3.5T version (exclusive to Signature Sport trim) which offers a twin-turbo V6 petrol engine with 279kW of power and 530Nm of torque.

You can also opt for the four-cylinder 2.5T version which offers 224kW.

The GV70 feels stable around tight corners, thanks in part to an electronic limited slip differential that enhances traction and stability.

Additionally, the model includes clever electronically controlled suspension which uses radars and cameras to watch for bumps in the road and adjust the shock absorbers to suit.

Augmented reality navigation is a smart addition.

The suite of safety features is comprehensive.

In fact, I’d say it’s almost too comprehensive, with a few too many alerts and beeps when driving.

But you can toggle between different settings to find the perfect fit for you.

Genesis has prioritised noise, vibration and harshness reduction as part of this update to the GV70 and these changes make for an impressively quiet and comfortable drive.

It really is a serene machine.

I found myself so relaxed that I was almost day dreaming, amid the hushed interior with its perfumed climate control.

Genesis’ wide range of interior trim options are impressive, and you can feel the quality of the materials and finishes inside the car.

On a practical note, the GV70 has a maximum towing capacity of 2200kg, which is great if you need to tow a trailer or boat.

There are 542 litres of cargo space and 1678 litres with the second row seats folded down.

All 2025 GV70 vehicles come with a five year, unlimited kilometre warranty.

2025 model year vehicles are entitled to complimentary services every 12 months or 10,000km for the first five years or 50,000km.

Verdict:

The Genesis GV70 offers impressive value for a luxury SUV packed with impressive features.

It offers comfort, power and advanced technology.
