NRMA experts have revealed where to buy the cheapest petrol in Sydney as prices begin to soar with the economy picking up.

Sydneysiders should head west and southwest if they want cheap petrol as prices begin to soar as part of the economic bounce back from COVID-19.

Motorists will be forced to shell out more for petrol than they have in almost a year as prices soar to pre-COVID levels.

Average highs will revert to 153c a litre – the highest prices since February last year – because an increased demand for fuel aligns with rising economic optimism driven by the start of the global vaccine rollout and the easing of restrictions.

Sydney prices began to soar on Wednesday, with the average price of U91 unleaded petrol in central Sydney reaching 148.2c a litre.

However, NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said motorists could still get a bargain at the bowser if they visited Sydney’s west and southwest.

“If you download the My NRMA app, it is very easy to located the cheapest petrol available in NSW,” Mr Khoury told NCA NewsWire.

The My NRMA app is showing the cheapest prices in Sydney are at Metro service stations, with 113c at Villawood, Fairfield and Condell Park West.

There is also 114c available at Metro Cabramatta and 115c at Bankstown.

Mr Khoury said that was for several reasons but mostly competition.

“Southwest and western Sydney are consistently where you'll find the cheapest petrol across the board,” he said.

“There are lot more service stations out there, and if you have competition, you'll see cheaper petrol.

“It is also geographic; a lot of these areas are what we call ‘go-through suburbs’.

“They are suburbs that, unless you live there, a lot people drive through to get to other places. There are more major highways in those areas than other suburbs, so there’s more opportunities for service stations to thrive.

“Whereas, the northern beaches you only go there to visit, it’s not like you drive there to get to anywhere else, so there tends to be more expensive petrol there.”
