A junior police officer has been praised for her “selfless” action after she helped rescue a 60-year-old woman from her car which plunged into a creek on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

The 60-year-old driver crashed into the creek after the car lost control on Pittwater Road at Dee Why about 12.30am on Sunday.

The car crashed through bushes and landed in Dee Why Lagoon.

Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command found the driver — and only occupant of the VW Golf sedan — still inside the partially submerged car.

NSW Police said in a media release on Sunday morning that the driver was recovering in hospital after she was pulled from the car by Probationary Constable Kiesha McJannet.

Constable McJanet rescued the woman from drowning, freeing her from the car which was “quickly taking on water”.

The car became fully submerged shortly after the woman was rescued.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics examined the 60-year-old at the scene before she was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for observation.

Acting Inspector Adrian De Visser praised Constable McJannet for her efforts.

“Probationary Constable McJannet has only been in the New South Wales Police Force since June 2023 – her selfless actions of entering the water and saving a woman from a precarious position is deserving of praise,” he said.

Crews will attempt to retrieve the vehicle from the lagoon on Sunday.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
