The individual rents their home from a landlord in Coventry – and even pays extra to use an allocated parking bay.

But despite this they have been left “hopeless and distressed” after being hounded by “mounds of threatening letters”.

The problems began when the resident sold their car and forgot to take out their permit.

When they purchased their new car, they were told by Mainstay Residential that there were no permits available and an exemption would be put in place.

However, UK Parking Control (UKPC) didn’t pay attention to the exemption – and soon he was being fined just for using his own space.

When the tenant sold his car again – meaning he needed a new permit – the exact same thing happened again.

But things took a further turn for the worse when the contract was taken over from UKPC and given to a company called Parking Control Management.

‘Abuse and bullying’

The resident told Coventry Live: “I kept my permit on display, but nobody sent me a letter saying I needed to update it with the new company and I got seven fines in like three days.

“I tried telling them about it, but they said they were sending the matter to their solicitors to deal with – even though they didn‘t tell me I needed a new permit.”

At this stage the two different parking companies began to claim that he owed them over $1864 each.

The motorist continued: “It just felt parasitic that they were just abusing me. Essentially, bullying me.

“I got to the point where I was actually feeling really distressed about this. You know I was literally so stressed about this whole thing because there was mounds of letters, demanding that I paid money, threatening, that they were going to come around the house type thing.

“There was absolutely no legal basis to it saying they‘re going to take me to court. So yeah, I just felt really stressed, really hopeless, it felt ridiculous.”

He added: “Essentially as the tenant I‘m paying the parking management company a fee every month out of my rent, so I’m their client, it’s their job to look after me, and they pay they and subcontract the parking out for this for this company to essentially protect my space against outsiders.

“It‘s very obviously my space, at the residence I live at, the address where the car is registered to, it’s clear as day that that’s my space, but I can’t get them to see sense.

“I‘m at the end of my tether to be honest.”

A spokesman for the property management company said: “We understand that parking charges issued were in error, and we are sorry for any distress caused by this misunderstanding.

“We have been in discussion with our parking control provider to resolve this and we are pleased to have been able to confirm that all charges have now been rescinded.”
