Shocking footage has captured the moment a distracted driver slammed violently into the rear of a car containing two young children.

The mortifying event unfolded in Penrith, in Sydney’s west, during a busy period of midmorning traffic on March 2.

As the vehicle with a dashcam slowed to a near-stop, the silver car behind maintained its speed before coming to a smashing halt.

The impact caused both of its front airbags to be deployed.

Video of the smash, which occurred just after 11am, was shared to the dashcam Owners Australia Facebook group on Thursday and sparked a massive response from social media users.

Close to 700 people weighed-in on what they thought could have been happening in the moments before the collision.

Many speculated the driver was checking out fuel prices as he drove past the 7-Eleven.

“Probably looking at the price for petrol and thinking to himself, ‘I wonder how many Frequent Flyer points I can earn’,” one person wrote in a comment.

“The rear-ended driver probably saw the price of 98 and lapsed into a coma,” someone else said.

Others were saddened to hear the cry of a baby in the car following the crash.

“Your poor bubba, their cry hurt my heart. I hope you’re all okay,” someone wrote.

“It’s so sad when you hear the kids crying,” another said.

Several alluded to pre-existing damage to the front of the car responsible for the smash.

“Judging by the front of that car I’m guessing they’re no strangers to rear ending,” one wrote.

Many urged the person whose car was hit to ensure their baby seats were replaced after the crash.
