Australia’s top earning speed cameras revealed

Each year millions of Aussie drivers are caught out by our road cameras, but there are some spots where you are more likely to be nabbed than others.

There are particular roads across the country that are famous for catching out rule-breaking motorists, with millions of drivers copping hefty fines each year.

No one likes receiving a fine in the mail so news.com.au has complied a list of the most lucrative speed cameras in some of Australia’s capital cities.

If you want to avoid coughing up thousands of dollars in fines, you should drive extra carefully when travelling through these spots.

NEW SOUTH WALES

Sydney has some of the country’s top earning speed cameras, with the most profitable resulting in more than $4 million in fines in 2020.

Last month director of the Centre for Road Safety for Transport NSW, Bernard Carlon said there was an increase in speeding-related road deaths throughout the pandemic.

“Speeding typically contributes to around 41 per cent of fatalities on NSW roads,” he said.

“139 people (47 per cent of the road toll) lost their lives on NSW roads in 2020 because someone was driving too fast.”

These are the locations of NSW’s top fixed speed cameras for 2020:

• Oxford St, Darlinghurst: 20,798 penalties resulting in $3,826,617 in fines

• Eastern Distributor, Darlinghurst: 18,211 penalties resulting in $4,398,883 in fines

• WestConnex M4 East Tunnel, Croydon: 12,908 penalties resulting in $3,682,598 in fines

• Second camera on Oxford St, Darlinghurst: 11,761 penalties resulting in $2,189,521 in fines

• Avoca St, Randwick: 10,740 penalties resulting in $2,028,254 in fines

• Prospect Highway, Blacktown: 9470 penalties resulting in $2,034,809 in fines

• M5 Motorway (Westbound), Arncliffe: 8756 penalties resulting in $2,350,892 in fines

• Elizabeth St, Surry Hills: 8301 penalties resulting in $2,395,836 in fines

• Lane Cove Tunnel, Lane Cove: 8237 penalties resulting in $2,080,686 in fines

• M5 Motorway (Eastbound), Bardwell Park: 7853 penalties resulting in $2,176,566

VICTORIA

Speed cameras play a critical role in keeping Victorians safe, the Department of Justice and Community Safety told news.com.au.

“Victoria’s road safety camera program plays a critical role in changing driver behaviour and saving lives and these cameras help prevent road trauma and reduce the number of motorists doing the wrong thing,” a spokesperson for the department said.

“Too many lives have been lost on our roads already and it’s up to every motorist to make the right decisions when they’re behind the wheel. When they don’t, road safety cameras and Victoria Police are there to hold them accountable.”

These are the locations of Victoria’s top fixed cameras for 2020:

• Rosanna Rd and Darebin St intersection (northbound), in Heidelberg: 23,807 penalties

• Warrigal Rd and Batesford Rd intersection, Chadstone: 23,401 penalties

• King St and La Trobe St intersection, West Melbourne Lane: 18,502 penalties

• Fitzroy St and Lakeside Drive intersection, St Kilda: 18,107 penalties

• Terminal Drive and Centre Rd intersection, Melbourne Airport: 11,593 penalties

Victoria’s top five mobile speed cameras for 2020 were:

• Black Forest Rd, Wyndham Vale, between Brimpton Grove and McGrath Rd: 3740 penalties

• Wetherby Rd, Doncaster, between Doncaster Rd and Koonung Creek: 3422 penalties

• Oak St, Parkville, between Park St and Manningham St: 3338 penalties

• Bell St, Preston, between Harold St and Watson St: 3321 penalties

• Ballarat Rd, Footscray, between Geelong Rd and Jamieson Ave: 2930 penalties

QUEENSLAND

The majority of Queensland’s top earning speed cameras are in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, however data provided by Queensland Police show drivers can be nabbed across the state.

“The Camera Detected Offence Program uses a range of camera technology suited to different road environments as a road safety initiative,” a Queensland Police spokesperson told news.com.au.

Nine of the state’s ten top earning speed cameras involve fixed cameras systems, with one involving a mobile speed camera.

These are the cameras that issued the highest number of infringements in 2020:

• Bermuda St at the Rudd St intersection, Broadbeach: 28,522 penalties

• Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Rd at the Gateway Motorway intersection, MacKenzie: 19,363 penalties

• Pacific Motorway, Loganholme: 16,006 penalties

• Main St, Kangaroo Point: 15,236 penalties

• Bruce Highway, Burpengary East: 15,161 penalties

• Lutwyche Rd at the Kendron Park Rd intersection, Kedron: 14,347 penalties

• Smith St at the Kumbari Ave intersection, Southport: 12,995 penalties

• Legacy Way Westbound: 12,891 penalties

• Gold Coast Highway, Broadbeach: 12,673 penalties

• Lutwyche Rd at the Norman St/Perry St intersection, Lutwyche: 11,716 penalties
