A truck driver who ploughed through the front of a home in Sydney’s southern suburbs is a “lucky boy” after escaping with only minor grazing.

The crash happened in Bexley on Forest Road at Mimosa Street about 6.50am on Tuesday.

A family of four escaped the home without injury, but the male driver was trapped in the cab for about two-and-a-half hours.

NSW Fire and Rescue Inspector Brad Smith said the driver was fortunate.

“Lucky boy. Three tons of bricks around him ready to come down,” Inspector Smith said of the precarious crash scene.

The structure collapsed around the truck, he said.

The driver was taken to hospital with only minor grazing. The cause of the crash appeared to be driver error, but police would investigate, Inspector Smith said.

The damaged building has a shop front which is not operating, with residential premises behind.

The driver’s injuries could not be assessed, nor could he be freed, until the structural damage to the building was assessed.

Footage from the scene shows significant damage to the building. Live powerlines were also felled in the crash. Energy authorities had isolated the power.

Six fire crews with 25 firefighters, plus ambulance staff and police were called to the scene.

Diversions on Forest Road were still in place as of 9.50am, according to information from Transport for NSW.

All eastbound motorists were being sent down St Georges Road and westbound motorists were diverted along Lewis Street.
