A young woman and an infant have died after a crash with a truck on a deadly highway in the Northern Territory.

A young woman and an infant have died in a horror crash with a truck in the Northern Territory.

Shortly after 5pm on Friday, emergency services were called to Roper Highway near Strangeways River following reports of a serious crash involving a car and a truck.

Northern Territory police confirmed a young woman and an infant died at the scene. Two other occupants of the vehicle were treated by paramedics at the scene.

Police have declared a crime scene at the regional stretch of highway near the Jilkminggan community in the northern part of the Territory.

Detectives from the Major Crash Investigations Unit will investigate the collision.

The crash comes during a spike in Northern Territory road fatalities.

Police report that 31 people have died on Northern Territory roads so far this year.

The number of Northern Territory road fatalities in the first six months of 2022 is just shy of the 35 road deaths reported for the entire previous year.

Friday’s collision is the fourth fatal crash on the Roper Highway in recent years after a pedestrian was hit by a car in 2020, a man died after a vehicle rollover in 2018, and a 18-month-old toddler was killed in a single vehicle crash in 2016.
