Aussie tradies rejoice: a new cut-price ute has landed in Australia.

Chinese maker Great Wall Motors — now known as GWM — has just revealed its Cannon dual-cab ute.

The three-tier model line-up is due to land in showrooms this month and prices start from $33,990 drive-away, which is about $20,000 cheaper than the base dual-cab Toyota HiLux.

All versions are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine making 120kW and 400Nm.

This is underpowered compared to class-leading vehicles such as the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Toyota HiLux, which use larger capacity turbodiesel engines.

All versions come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.

The entry-level variant comes with an impressive level of standard equipment including 18-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, a nine-inch touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and faux leather seats.

What is more impressive is the high level of standard safety gear, which includes auto emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, radar cruise control, reversing camera and seven airbags. And the addition of a centre front airbag means the Cannon will be eligible for a five-star ANCAP rating.

The mid-tier Cannon-L is priced at $37,990 drive-away and improves specification with a sports bar, tub liner, cargo ladder, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats and an electronically adjustable driver’s seat.

Safety is improved with the addition of a 360-degree camera and front parking sensors.

The range-topping Cannon-X is $3000 more expensive at $40,990 drive-away.

For the extra spend, you’re treated to leather interior upholstery, wireless device charging, seven-inch digital instrument display and voice commands.

GWM also sweetens the deal by guaranteeing its vehicles for seven-years/unlimited km and throwing in five years roadside assistance.
