A South Australian man has managed to escape from a serious crash alive after his car was split in two.

The 21-year-old man from Darlington was travelling in a Mitsubishi Magna sedan along Oaklands Road at Glengowrie, southwest of Adelaide, about 11pm on Tuesday when he crashed into three power line poles.

When emergency crews responded, they saw the vehicle had broken into two pieces and the fuel tank had also separated from the car as a result of the collision.

It also caused powerlines to fall, sparking a power outage in the area.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the Mitsubishi, was taken to Flinders Medical Centre with non-life-threatening injuries.

SA Police are investigating the crash, which could lead to the man being charged with serious driving offences.

SA Power Networks worked to restore the power, which came back on Wednesday morning.
