2024 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max confirmed for Australia

Families on the hunt for a new seven-seat SUV are in luck as a new option is due to arrive in Australia soon from an emerging car maker.

China's new mid-size SUV comes to Australia

New car brand Chery continues its aggressive expansion in Australia.

The Chinese maker confirmed its Tiggo 8 Pro Max large seven seat SUV will land in showrooms from April and compete with established players such as the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Kluger.

It’ll join the small Omoda 5 and medium sized Tiggo 7 Pro SUVs in the brand’s local line-up.

Chery will launch the Tiggo 8 Pro Max in three model grades called Urban, Elite and Ultimate.

Urban and Elite grades are front-wheel drive and the range-topping Ultimate is all-wheel drive.

All variants are powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that makes 180kW and 375Nm. It is expected to be paired with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, which is found in the brand’s other vehicles.

It’ll be covered by Chery’s seven year/unlimited km warranty and capped price servicing program.

Chery Australia managing director Lucas Harris says the Tiggo 8 Pro max will deliver a premium motoring experience.

“We are delighted to introduce the Tiggo 8 Pro Max to the Australian market. This modern and innovative 7 seat family SUV expands the Chery range in Australia and is set to deliver a premium motoring experience,” says Harris.

Chery hasn’t revealed exact specifications for the Tiggo 8 Pro Max but the maker says it’ll have a sleek design and spacious interior with plenty of luxe elements such as dual 12.3-inch digital displays, faux leather upholstery and a flat bottomed steering wheel.

The cabin will have plenty of hi-tech features.

Prices will be revealed closer to the vehicle’s arrival in dealerships but expect a starting price below $50,000 for the base Urban grade.

Chery returned to Australian shores in 2023, after an eight year hiatus.

Gone are the sub-$10,000 cars of its first instalment and in its place are vehicles pitched closer to mainstream rivals.

Chery sold more than 6000 vehicles in 2023, but that fell short of its initial lofty aspirations to move about 10,000 cars.

The maker has more models in the pipeline for Australia, too, including an electric version of the Omoda 5 compact SUV that would go up against the Hyundai Kona Electric.
