Lexus has revealed an all-new model that combines go-anywhere four-wheel drive ability with pampering luxury and cutting edge technology.

Toyota’s tough Prado four-wheel drive is getting a luxury makeover.

Lexus – Toyota’s luxury offshoot – has revealed the new GX four-wheel drive that shares its underpinnings with the next-generation Toyota Prado. It’ll join the Toyota LandCruiser based LX in the brand’s global line-up.

It is built on a rugged ladder frame that forms the backbone of old school tough four-wheel drives and utes such as the Toyota LandCruiser and Ford Ranger.

The GX has plenty of grunt to match its tough guy pedigree.

It’ll be fitted with the choice of two engines: a 3.5-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol engine mated to a 10-speed auto and a hybrid set-up that uses a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine and electric motor paired with an eight speed auto.

Both will have full time four-wheel drive, low range gears and a centre locking differential for added off-road ability.

The Lexus GX’s chief engineer, Koji Tsukasaki, said the new model allowed families to explore the great outdoors.

“It has been thoroughly developed for driving on all kinds of terrains, from winding roads to rocky, dirt roads all over the world. However, you don’t have to push the limits all the time with this vehicle,” he said.

The Lexus GX has previously been sold in the US and the new versions improves the approach and departure angles considerably, which will further enhance its ability to tackle rough and rocky terrain.

Multiple driving modes include Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow and Rock.

Hi-tech features such as a crawl control and downhill descent allow drivers to cover tough terrain and steep descents without using the accelerator or brake.

A range of cameras give users a high-definition image of what is around the vehicle and even beneath it.

The GX isn’t just about its rugged ability, though. It will pamper owners like few off-roaders can.

Customers can swap out the middle row of seats for two luxury captain’s chairs and the cabin is fitted out with high-quality materials and a meticulous attention to detail.

There is a giant 14-inch central touchscreen and a head-up display that projects vital information onto the windscreen in front of the driver.

Lexus Australia is currently evaluating whether to launch the GX locally.
