The high-performance version of Mercedes’ stunning new luxury EV has just been unveiled ahead of the opening of the Munich motor show.

It’s destined to top the EQS range in Australia, where it will arrive in about March next year.

It’s a powerhouse. In standard form the combined output of the EQS53’s two electric

motors totals 484kW. This is an increase of 99kW over the EQS580, the already fast

dual-motor model launched in Europe in July.

But the Dynamic Plus option pack turns the EQS53 into a real rocket. This adds a

boost function, increasing maximum power to 560kW when the driver selects race-start mode.

With it engaged, the car can accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in just 3.4 seconds, according to AMG. If the claim is correct, this EV heavyweight is truly Ferrari-fast, though its top speed is restricted to only 250km/h.

The EQS53 features AMG-upgraded brake and suspension systems. There are changes to appearance, too. The most obvious is an EV version of the toothy Panamera-style grille used on internal-combustion engine-powered AMGs. The car also has a small rear spoiler.

Massive 21- or 22-inch wheels and tyres are fitted. They’re so big that the standard

rear-wheel steering system can’t turn them in quite as large an arc as in the regular EQS.

Hyperscreen, the huge display that’s optional in lesser EQS models, is standard in the EQS53. Running almost the full width of the cabin, this single sheet of shaped glass houses the driver’s instruments, a massive infotainment screen and a third screen for the front-seat passenger. Other interior alterations include an AMG steering wheel and front seats.

The car also plays specially designed electric motor music inside the cabin. The two

selectable synthetic sonic styles are called Authentic and Performance. AMG promises the acceleration sound really hits the stomach.
