2021 Audi SQ2 review: Cute looks hide devilish performance

To the casual observer this SUV looks like the rest of the compact high-riding gang, but what’s under the bonnet turns it into a Mr Hyde-like monster.

Car safety 2021: What are the safest car models?

For a pint-sized SUV, the new Audi SQ2 packs a hell of a punch. The small softroader is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that pumps out 221kW of power and 400Nm of torque.

Aided by a sharp-shifting seven-speed auto and all-wheel-drive traction, the SQ2 can dispatch the sprint to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

If not for a slight rise in the ride height and some softroader styling cues, it could pass for a hot hatch.

The SQ2’s selectable driving modes allow you to alter the character of the car.

Choose Comfort for a more cushioned ride or select Dynamic and the suspension stiffens, the steering sharpens and the gear changes become snappier.

In Dynamic mode, the little SUV shows great poise through corners, delivering reassuring grip and great body control. Quick, light steering adds to the enjoyment when you’re pushing through tight corners.

In Comfort mode, the SQ2 is less impressive, with a ride that’s a little harsh and bumpy over pockmarked urban streets.

Claimed thirst of 7.7L/100km is relatively thirsty for a car of this size and it requires pricey 98 octane fuel.

Edgy styling and big alloy wheels give the SQ2 plenty of street appeal.

Prices start at about $71,500 drive-away, which is a sizeable jump over the rest of the Q2 range that starts from about $48,500 drive-away for the base 35 TFSI.

The SQ2 is well equipped, though, and its crisp, funky styling will appeal to well-heeled young couples.

Big 19-inch alloys, red brake calipers, quad tailpipes and an aggressive grille give the little Audi plenty of street appeal.

That carries into the cabin, which has snug-fitting heated front seats wrapped in supple diamond-stitched Nappa leather.

The interior has plenty of luxury finishes.

Stainless steel pedals and paddle shifters reflect the sporty focus, although some hard plastic surfaces detract from the luxury ambience a little.

Easy to reach dual-zone climate controls and physical buttons work much better than the fiddly touchscreen controls favoured by some makers.

The rear seats are cosy but can accommodate adults with relative comfort on short trips. The boot is small but more than enough for a couple’s weekend getaway.

Infotainment is taken care of via an 8.3-inch centre screen controlled by a rotary dial. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and digital radio are standard, as is a thumping 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen audio unit and a wireless charging pad.

On the road the SQ2 comes alive, with rapid acceleration and corner hugging poise.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument display in front of the driver is a highlight, displaying crisp graphics and high-definition maps.

Audi has covered most of the safety bases with the SQ2. It will brake automatically if it senses a potential crash with other cars, pedestrians and cyclists and will alert you if there is something in your blind spot.

If you start to drift out of your lane, it will gently vibrate the steering wheel and pull you back into your lane.

There’s also an advanced form of cruise control that can automatically brake, steer and accelerate in stop-start traffic.

The SQ2 is a great option for cashed-up couples looking for a fun weekender.

Unfortunately Audi is persisting with its offer of a sub-par three year/unlimited km warranty – Mercedes-Benz offers five years and Lexus four.

Servicing is reasonable for a prestige car, though. A prepaid five-year plan costs $2540.

VERDICT 3.5/5

Head turning looks, a hi-tech interior and sharp drive experience make it an appealing choice for drivers with an eye for the weekends.
