Hyundai recalls 4700 cars over potentially dangerous fuel defect

One of Australia’s most-purchased car makers has been forced to recall more than 4700 cars over a potentially dangerous issue.

Hyundai has recalled more than 4700 cars over a fault that can cause a car to stall.

The affected cars are Kona N (OS) and i30 Sedan N (CN7) models, made between 2020 and 2023.

The defect is in the fuel control valve of these models.

“If this occurs, the engine could stall, resulting in a sudden loss of motive power whilst driving,” the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts said.

That agency oversees vehicle recalls.

“A sudden loss of motive power whilst driving increases the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users,” the notice reads.

Hyundai Australia has been approached for comment. The list of 4781 affected vehicle identification numbers is available online.

The standard Kona SUV 2023 model retails for $49,200. The latest, and basic, i30 Sedan N (CN7) sells for $56,777.

Hyundai dealers will co-ordinate the free defect checks and replacements.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the fuel control valve in the high-pressure fuel pump could allow excess fuel to enter the pump,” the recall notice reads.

The exact same models – the Kona N (OS), i30N Sedan (CN7) – were subject to a previous recalls notice in 2023. That time, the risk of a transmission fault compromised the vehicles’ “fail safe” driving mode. Similarly, the vehicles could lose power while driving.
