New details have emerged in a dangerous car chase that ended with a car crashing into a traffic light and the driver arrested.
The white Hyundai Sonata drove at high speed through Sydney’s southwest for half an hour on Thursday.
The car then crashed into a traffic light at an intersection near Barclay Rd in North Rocks about 11am.
Aerial footage shows police surrounding the car before arresting the driver and passenger.
Dressed in a white hoodie and black leggings, a woman was led from the scene.
The male driver, meanwhile, sat handcuffed against a power pole.
The Daily Telegraph said the pair had attempted to flee before three unmarked police cars swooped in.
The Sydney paper also reported police removed a rifle and gel blaster from the car following the crash.
The car, which has interstate plates, is believed to have been stolen from Queensland earlier this week.
The chase began about 9.30am after officers patrolling the Revesby area spotted an allegedly stolen vehicle on the Hume Highway at Prestons.
In a statement, police said they began a pursuit after the vehicle failed to stop as directed.
The pursuit was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.
Polair continued to monitor the vehicle before it crashed on North Rocks Rd at North Rocks.
The male driver and female passenger were arrested at the scene before being taken to Ryde Police Station.
The dramatic chase across large swathes of Sydney’s southwest was captured by the Nine News helicopter.
The car was seen in the footage driving dangerously, including through multiple intersections.
The Hyundai was also seen travelling over double lines and nearly clipping passing motorists.
The vision also shows a woman with her legs on the car’s dashboard while looking at her mobile phone.
The Daily Telegraph reported that traffic around North Rocks was banked up as police set-up a crime scene.
The car had travelled through suburbs including Homebush, Parramatta and North Parramatta.
Five cars were at one point involved in the chase.
Speaking to media on Thursday afternoon, NSW Police Superintendent Adam Whyte said a 39-year-old man from Glenfield and a 37-year-old woman from Ingleburn were arrested following the crash.
“It was clear the driver and the passenger had no concern for other roads users, it was appalling, and it‘s lucky no one was injured,” Superintendent Whyte said.
He also revealed two guns were found in the car: a sawn-off rifle and a gel blaster.
“The weapons are not registered … they’re now in our custody, which is good,” he said.
“It was a great result: No person was injured, two people in custody, and two firearms off the street.”
Vision shows the car travelling along the M5 and then M7, swerving onto the wrong side of the road.
The car was also seen on the Great Western Highway, Reservoir Rd, and James Ruse Drive.
Sydney woman Lauren Pride told The Daily Telegraph that she was driving on Windsor Rd in Baulkham Hills when she saw the vehicle.
“This car came flying up behind me and I thought it was going to hit me,” Ms Pride said.
“I was stopped at the red light, I thought someone was going to get hit.
“I had about 16 cop cars pass by at the set of lights.
“You don’t see this every day in Sydney so that’s a bit upsetting.”
Other locals told The Daily Telegraph about the large police presence, with more than a dozen cars descending on the suburban area.
Online commentators were quick to compare the chase, streamed live on TV, to those in the US.
Ian Anderson wrote: “More like the USA every day.
“Let’s stay Australian, mate.”
Another user wrote: “It wouldn’t last this long in America.”
