Most people will never experience the singer of their favourite childhood band sliding into their DMs, then again most people don’t make rock albums with movie stars or have dance music icons remix their songs.
All of the above has recently happened to Sydney rockers Lime Cordiale, who will be heading to Adelaide twice in the coming months to headline Wine Machine and the return of V8 supercar festival the VALO Adelaide 500.
The band’s recent meteoric rise has seen them attracting fans both locally and internationally, including British actor Idris Elba who recently joined the group to release the surprise collaborative album Cordi Elba.
Speaking on the phone from Berlin, in the midst of a mammoth 20-date European tour, the band’s singer Oli Leimbach reflects on their new-found friendship with the A-list movie star.
“He’s under the impression that no one knows him in Australia, and I guess compared to the UK maybe that’s true, but everyone I know seems to know him,” remarks Leimbach.
“Every time he’s performed on stage with us he gets so nervous and excited, he’ll be pacing around and asking us ‘how should I walk-on, should we practice the walk-on?’
“It’s pretty cute and also humbling to see someone of that status can still get so excited like that.”
Though the band have become close friends with Elba they still find themselves surprised by the pull of having a global superstar as a musical collaborator.
“One of the recent surprising things that he dropped on us was ‘oh hey guys I’ve got Fatboy Slim to remix our track Holiday, he’s working on it now,’ says Leimbach.
“Initially I thought there was a typo in his message, I was like ‘actually Fatboy Slim?’
“I guess that’s one of the bonuses of being pals with Idris Elba, he’s got these connections where it’s like ‘yep happy to lock that one in no worries.’ ”
Recently the band were shocked to find out that one of Australia’s biggest ever musical exports the Wiggles were fans of theirs.
“We actually bumped into Murray and Greg at the ARIAs last year, they were trying to come out onto the balcony but couldn’t get the door open, watching it happen almost felt like a wiggly sketch” laughed Leimbach.
“Then they walk straight up to us and it’s like ‘oh my god The Wiggles are approaching us, this is freaking us out’
“They asked if they could get a photo with us because they’ve got daughters who like our music and we were like ‘this needs to go the other way round!’
“Later on they hit us up on Instagram about covering one of our songs, you know you’ve made it when the Wiggles are sliding into your DMs.”
The band are locked in to headline the return of Australia’s largest domestic motorsport event, now known as the VALO Adelaide 500, performing on the Friday evening with The Presets, Baker Boy and local legends Teenage Joans.
They’ll then be returning to play Wine Machine at Serafino Wines with the likes of Flight Facilities, Cut Copy and Masked Wolf.
“We are definitely wine guys, I’m pretty happy with a cleanskin bottle but I guess maybe that makes me a little more appreciative of a good one every now and then,” Leimbach says.
“I’m always sceptical with the backstage areas at these sorts of things, we played recently at a gin festival where we couldn’t find any gin.
“You guys have a lot of great wines though so I think we’ll be OK.”
Lime Cordiale will play the VALO Adelaide 500 Dec 2 and Wine Machine Dec 17.
