A drunken argument over money between two best friends has landed a Wingfield man on attempted murder charges, the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court heard on Thursday.

Kiyomarcroos Jacob, 36, was charged with attempted murder following a stabbing at Wingfield last week.

Police and emergency services were called to Graham Street on Thursday, March 4 after reports of an alleged violent altercation.

When officers arrived they located a man with stab wounds to the back and he was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Police prosecutor Phillip Dams told the magistrates court the alleged victim and defendant were known to each other and there was another witness to the incident.

“The witness said they were drinking together – drinking beers and then moving onto spirits,” he said.

“The witness said he saw the alleged victim and defendant begin arguing over some money that was apparently owed. The victim got up to hug the defendant and a fight commenced.

“The witness then states the victim has fallen to the ground and that he saw the defendant standing over him with a knife in his hand.”

Mr Dams told the court the alleged victim was stabbed several times in the back and suffered a punctured lung in the incident.

Defence lawyer Stacey Carter said Jacob was originally from Sri Lanka and had been living in Australia since 2012. She said the defendant spoke virtually no English.

“He was arrested on March 4 and was not interviewed by police as I understand there was no interpreter available,” she said.

Ms Carter said Jacob and the alleged victim were best friends, work colleagues and housemates, who had lived together for the past two years.

“He (Jacob) moved out for a period of time but moved back two months ago,” she said.

Ms Carter said the facts of charge against her client were very limited.

She said her client had prior convictions for driving offences, but no priors for violent behaviour.

Magistrate Jayanthi McGrath ordered a bail inquiry report and Jacob will reappear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday.
